African Education & Indigenous Peoples

The CIES IKA SIG invited Dr. Assié-Lumumba to be the Semali Symposium Distinguished Speaker at CIES 2024. She is the Director of the Institute for African Development (IAD) and Professor of African and African Diaspora education, Comparative and International education, Social structures, African social history, and the study of Gender, in the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University. Dr. Assié-Lumumba is also a Past President of CIES.

The talk was an invitation to engage some of the key ideas in Nyerere’s education philosophy that can be emulated in the continued search for solutions to Africa’s educational and persistent development challenges. The paper is a reflective essay that will review several of the central philosophical ideas in Nyerere’s conception of relevant education for Africa, highlighting indigenous epistemologies.
